Besides the housing, what is the general condition of the area? Do you notice things like garbage or junky cars in the area?

Boundaries

The neighborhood under consideration is the Memorial super neighborhood. The boundaries are determined by geography. “The area is is bounded by Buffalo Bayou to the south, Barker Reservoir to the west, the Katy Freeway (Interstate 10) to the north, and the Memorial Villages (Spring Valley Village, Piney Point Village, Bunker Hill Village, Hedwig Village, Hilshire Village and Hunters Creek Village), a contiguous group of independent municipalities, to the east” (Mulvihill, 2006).

Housing

The houses are a bit old, but there are some that have been built recently. The condition of the houses is fair. The type of housing is single family. Most of the houses are occupied. A few were spotted to be vacant. From the housing, most of the people are doing white collar jobs.

Signs of Decay

The area is well kept. This means that the condition is good. There is no garbage thrown around. Certain areas are having garbage bins. Each and every house has a parking space with either two or one and the cars are in good condition. It seems they are always driven.

Parks and Recreational Areas

There is one recreational area. The recreational area is divided into two parts. There is one part that is meant for children and the other part for adults. The children part is equipped with playing materials while the other part for adults has seats where people can sit or relax.

Transportation

The area is a fairly travelled area. It is well supplied with public transport. There is both the train and bus. A number of people are using public transport. This is because most of the private cars are left in the parking lots. Most people are using public transport because it is easily available.

Economics

No factories are located in this area. Most of the things that are evident in the neighborhood are houses and shops.

Schools

There are a total of 7 schools in the area. Two of these schools are institution of higher learning, 3 are high schools, and 2 are elementary schools. These learning institutions have got good reputation. They are known to provide better services to learners.

Religion

It seems most of the residents of the area are Christians. This is because all of the churches that have been observed are Christian churches. Among some of the churches seen are Catholic church, Anglican church, Orthodox church, and Redeemed Gospel. These churches are big in size. They must be having large number of followers.

General

There is no evidence of gang activity in this area. There are a few billboards. Most of the billboards are located near the center, which is busy. The signs that are seen are the ones that are showing direction of various areas. This neighborhood is fairly cool. There are not many activities taking place. The place is diversely occupied. This is because there are White, Black Americans, Indians, and Hispanics among others.

Environmental Health Factors

There is something in this neighborhood that is negative. There are many fast food stores in the areas. These fast food stores are closely located. Most of these stores are selling things, such as burgers and fries among others. This type of food is not considered to be healthy. The other negative thing about this area is that there are very few exercising facilities. Most of the people in the neighborhood do not take the idea of physical exercise seriously.

General Resident Health Observations

There is no general positive health behavior evident in the area. The residents of the area are inactive physically. As earlier stated there is facility for physical exercise. Most of them send their free time indoor. It is as if they like to isolate themselves. The negative health behavior that is seen in the area is the lack of physical activity and the idea of spending much time indoor.

Community Health Issues

Based on my observation, the health issue that I expect to be prevalent in the area is obesity. Obesity relates to having too much body fat. People are considered to obese when they have excess adipose tissue. Most of the people in the area are having a Body Mass Index (BMI) ranging between 25 and 29.9, meaning they are overweight while others have BMI above 30, which means that they are obese.

Services

There are the protective services in the area. Both the Memorial Village police and fire departments are located in this area. This protective service is fully functional and it is operating as it expected. Three social centers are in the area (The Forum at Memorial Woods, Brookdale Memorial City, and Brookdale Memorial Oaks).There is the Memorial health care service in the area.

Community Needs

The problem in this community is that people do not consider so much things relating to nutrition and healthy lifestyle.

Community Strengths

There is a large space to set the physical centers and facilities that are needed in the neighborhood.

Community Crisis Response

There is a well established health care facility in the area that has the ability of dealing with the problem that is facing the residents. Also, there are a number of organizations that have the ability to create awareness with regards to the matter.

There is no obstacle present in the area that has the ability to hinder the provision of health care services.

Subjective Feeling

I was comfortable being in the area. These people in the area were friendly and welcoming. Yes, this would be an area I would like to live and work.
