The peripheral vascular system consists of all blood vessels and their contents, except cardiac and cerebral vessels. The primary role of these vessels is to supply nutrients and oxygen to body tissues and of cells to the various organs for excretion. When the cardiovascular system has a pathology, it can prompt diagnosis by examining the peripheral vascular system.
Subjective Data
The patient reports no history of pain in the lower limbs or cramping of the hips. There is no history of weakness or tingling in the lower limbs. The patient reports no history of , heaviness of the legs when resting, or swelling of the feet. There is no history of coldness or loss of hair in the limbs. There is no history of difficulty in breathing or easy fatigability. There is no family history of cardiovascular disease.
Objective Data
On inspection, there is no in the lower limbs. No limb is amputated. No nail changes in both hands and feet are noted. The skin is normal in pigmentation and hair consistency. There is no pallor or cyanosis. No leg ulcers are visible.
On palpation, there is no edema or tenderness. The radial pulse is normal at seventy beats per minute. It is normal in volume and character. The brachial, carotid, and popliteal pulses are also present and normal. The capillary refill is normal at 2 seconds. Both the lower and upper limbs are warm, and there is no temperature gradient. The blood pressure is normal at 119/85 mmHg. On auscultation, there are no bruits.
Conclusion
The peripheral vascular disease commonly affects the lower limbs. A thorough history and physical examination can help diagnose peripheral vascular diseases such as . Early detection and diagnosis of peripheral venous disease prevents severe disease and eventually leads to a better prognosis.
