Question 2
The period between 1980 and 1992 is often referred to as the resurgence of conservatism because it witnessed many reforms and changes by the government to get a conservative government. Conservatism conformed to particular social norms held by the American culture and rejected the domination and influence of the federal government on state affairs (American Yawp). The resurgence of conservatism between 1980 and 1992 was characterized by particular political and religious movements. The period from 1980 to 1992 is different from the 1930s to 1970s because there was a lot of activity that indicated the fight for modern conservatism. No leader actively fought for conservatism like Ronald Reagan influenced conservatism when he took power in the 1980s. The world was recovering from the Second World War, and there was no focus on preserving social and political philosophies to a considerable extent.
The resurgence of conservatism was exercised in a variety of ways. When Ronald Reagan became the president of the United States of America, he enacted policies that would promote the social and political philosophy of the country. Reagan desired that religion be involved in public life. He felt that people needed to be religious and be guided by federal and state laws, and conform to the spiritual teachings. He stressed public prayers and always wanted to incorporate religion into state affairs.
Conservatism was also expressed through the campaigns against certain laws. When Ronald Reagan took charge of the leadership, he was very hesitant to legalize abortions and other practices such as homosexuality in the United States of America. The leader claimed that everyone who supported abortion was already born but wanted to deny others the opportunity to live. He also stressed religion and used it to condemn the acts. The conservatism is also proven by the public’s response to the laws on abortion and homosexuality. Many religious movements arose to speak and fight against the laws of abortion and homosexuality. Many church leaders felt that it was against the laws of nature and went against the will of God. Religion influenced political affairs since many religious groups felt that the laws should be amended to preserve socially accepted behaviors and prevent divergent from . There was a battle that saw many appeals on the Supreme Court fighting against the legalization of abortion and homosexuality.
Conservatism was also expressed through the economic policies enacted by Ronald Reagan. When he took power, he wanted to achieve economic empowerment in the country and chose to use policies. He desired to preserve American economic power by reducing the money supply to reduce possible inflation. There was also a need to relieve the citizens from heavy taxes. Therefore, there was a significant reduction of marginal tax charged on the income received from labor and income (American Yawp). The economy would also be boosted through the reduction of regulation. The authority was neutralized by the involvement of religious groups and the set policies. The era was also marked by the enactment of a policy set by Ronald Reagan to reduce spending by the government. The move was going to boost the country’s economy because there was a lot to invest and little to spend.
I believe modern conservatism emerged earlier than in the 1980s. There were enough signs of people trying to be liberal and live outside the conformities of social and political norms. There was no avenue to express oneself, which did not make modern conservatism apparent. However, many people felt they had the right to choose what to do with their bodies. Many were already subscribing to homosexuality and abortion. The policies set by Ronald Reagan only made modern conservatism noticeable. Before 1980 many people had moved away from socially accepted moral codes and adopted a modern culture. Religion no longer played a considerable role in shaping people’s behavior and actions. Also, in the 1970s, there was already a rise of thinkers and political activists who championed anticommunism and spoke against those that violated accepted social norms. The rise of the group indicated many people had already embraced modern conservatism.
Question 3
After the end of the civil war, America got involved in the affairs of other countries in a bid to protect its interest around the world. The foreign policy of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard allowed America to access the world through exploration, cultural exchange, and trade (American Yawp). However, America used foreign policy to its advantage and, in the process, led to many conflicts. As Jimmy Carter Stated, the United States of America is the most warlike country in the world. The foreign policy led to many disputes between America and the countries involved.
The desire for America to gain and maintain control of trade in Asia led to the breakout of the Vietnam War. The foreign policy allowed the Americans to access countries such as China and Laos to facilitate trade and the acquisition of commodities. In order to maintain its power, there were conflicts, and America opened access to Vietnam and sent troops to fight. The troops would raid and open fire on places without regard to their lives. The American troops accessed the South Vietnamese village one time and burned the villagers alive (American Yawp). The situation was worse because the American officials often manipulated the media to falsify information and paint a terrible image of the war going on in Vietnam. Moreover, there was no censorship of the coverage of war which made the public get exposed to the horrible situation in Vietnam. While the Vietnamese were in the war, many American leaders took the issue lightly and even named the situation as Vietnamization. Many of the citizens and leaders also supported the war in Vietnam and saw it as a way of building a civil society. The interference led to considerable harm in the country, which lasted for a long time. The country took long before healing from the effects of war.
The involvement of America in other countries’ affairs led to the cold war and the subsequent conflicts between the communist and capitalist nations and military preparation. About one year after the cold war, a telegram was sent from the embassy of America to Russia condemning the communism policy (American Yawp). The message was provocative and insulted the communist country. Moreover, the war was escalated by the failure of three superpowers to agree, Britain, America, and Russia. The cold war was a global issue that touched many countries in the world. However, the main countries in conflict were the main superpowers, America and Russia. The war would escalate and affect the world economy as each of the two powers tried to influence others to buy their ideologies. The cold war restrained many economic activities, and at some point, there was unemployment due to the closure of factories and lack of movement of commodities for trade. America felt that it needed to restore the political situation, but Russia saw the move as an attack on its policy which propagated the cold war. The foreign policy led to a stalemate among the European countries that almost erupted into war. There was a huge response to the cold war that saw Russia manufacture weapons in readiness for physical war. The situation also encouraged the testing of weapons in case any eruptions occurred. The communist superpower had its troops ready to invade. There was massive recruitment of people into armies and the production of weaponry.
The foreign policy facilitated the greed of America to occupy and control trade in the European nations and eventually led to the war in Korea and its division. The Cold War between the two superpowers had spread to European countries, with America and Russia trying to gain support. In 1945 the two countries had occupied Japan, and the nation surrendered. The struggle countries and there was a need to divide Korea. There was the North and the South. Russia managed to convince the leader of North Korea to support the communist side. Also, Russia convinced China to support the North Korean leader in his quests. North Korea successfully launched a surprise attack on South Korea with the help of Russia (American Yawp). The attack saw South Korea fall to the communist side. United Nations had to intervene and demand the withdrawal of the war troops from the south. Were it not for the interference of the United States of America, there would not have been the war in Korea that led to the disruption of many political and economic activities in the country.
