The IOM Future of Nursing Rep
In the recent past, the healthcare systems in the United States of America was faced with many challenges. Some of these challenges were arising from within the healthcare sector and some from the outside environment as well as the policies under which the system was operating under. There were series of concerns to address these burning issues in the health sector for correct delivery of health care services to the general population of the people of the United States of America. For these reasons, a number contribution was laid in place for the assisting this situation. This is seen in the contribution of Robert Wood Johnson through the committee, which resulted in the development of the IOM report Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. The aim of this work is to review the part played by the RWJF committee alomg side with AARP on the future of Nursing , this work will also explore the proposal of IOM for future nursing as well as deliberate on the significance of the report concerning Nursing workforce, practice and education. Additionally, this work will accentuate the responsibility of Georgia based action coliations, define how its inventiveness will back the improvement of the objectives of the future of nursing and point out the hinderance/ challenges to improvement of nursing in Georgia.

In the year 2008, the committee under Robert Wood Johnson (RWJF), and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) launched an assessment with the aim of transforming the entire health profession in the United States of America, which led to the production of the report on the future of nursing. With the committee, he made several recommendations, which facilitated the production of these report(Frenk et al., 2010). He examined the capacity of the workforce in the nursing sector that would be appropriate for the transformation and reformation of the sector in the public system. Some of the recommendations he worked out include redefining the roles played by nurses and also highlighted the associated factors such as the societal concerns on nursing, shortages on the workforce and the effects of the incorporation of the use of technological devices in the nursing arena(Stevens, 2013). He also recommended the expansion of the nursing facility, increasing the number of the training schools for nurses and giving new scope in the nursing training institutions to ensure that the adequate number of students or nurses are produced with the required skills to transform the entire health sector. This is to make the nurses trained to be well prepared for the innovations especially in the use of technology. In addition, he raised concern over the delivery of the healthcare facilities and services to the general public and hence recommended innovative ways to ensure that the facilities are effectively given to the public in a correct and efficient way. These resulted in the creation of the IOM report which was produced in the year 2010 to ensure that these aspects are affected in the health care unit.

The report generated under these recommendations, generally known as the IOM report “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health“. The report emphasizes on the nursing education. Since the needs of the patient and the general care system have become complex, the higher qualifications for nurses is of great interest. The report thus lays the foundations for the facilitation of proper learning environment and effective innovation in the line of training of nurses in preparation for the future (Nardi & Gyurko, 2013). Some of the skills and competencies required of nurses in this line include leadership skills, the policy governing the general healthcare system, ways of improving the general health system, research in the healthcare services and the utilization of evidence-based approaches in the treatment of various patients. The education for the nurses as suggested by the report is to prepare nurses to handle a larger increasing number of the US population(National Academies of Sciences & Engineering Medicine, 2016).
As a result of this, many nursing schools have developed ways of dealing with the rapid growth in research within the healthcare system and also adding on top to what was previously being learned in the nursing school contents and curriculum to best suit the nurses being trained to handle the future emergencies. New approaches and methodologies have been developed in response to these rising needs of the students training as nurses.
In addition, the report laid the ground for the improvement of the workforce in the healthcare service system. With the increase in the number of the nursing training school, large numbers of competent nurses are produced to cover up the workforce shortages in the sector and hence facilitating the proper handling of the increasing population(National Academies of Sciences & Engineering Medicine, 2016). The competencies level in the nursing workforce also has been improved with the effect of these report. The nurses trained have moved from the aspect of task-based proficiencies to evidence-based and higher-level proficiencies to ensure higher achievements on the levels of the client in terms of healthcare services deliveries(Buerhaus et al., 2012). This provided a stable ground for the aspect of critical thinking and decision making strategies in the healthcare system especially under the variety of clinical situations and care settings.
To ensure the success of the recommendations by Johnson Foundation and the IOM report, the action coalition played various important roles. The coalition consist of 21 states which collaborated together to ensure the success of the and also facilitate the advancement of the IOM reports recommendations. The coalition work to facilitate campaign to ensure commitment among member states and the locals to facilitate proper achievements of the recommendations by the report on the building of the healthier nation(Buerhaus et al., 2012). The action thus works in collaborating with various community stakeholders such as the organizations and the business bodies to work jointly in driving change which is remarkable in the entire health sector.
In all the states in partnership, the coalition works to ensure full realizations of the recommendations in the IOM reports through a number of ways. First, the coalition has a role in the removal of practice barrier for the nurses and health practitioners across the member states. This will help the entire state and the nation to identify the area where appropriate actions are needed and how they can be sorted out with regards to the recommendation by the report.
Secondly, coalition helps in expanding opportunities for in an effort to collaboratively improve the general care system across the entire state and the member states. This helps in the identification of areas of concern and hence facilitates the improvement of innovation in the system. This also helps in the development of subgroups to focus innovation practices and hence a healthy work environment (Nardi & Gyurko, 2013). In addition, the coalition has a role in preparing all nurses to be in the forefront in establishing a change in the society and the nation beyond.
The Significance of the Report on Practice, Education and Nursing Workforce
IOM’s report ignited a tremendous task and responsiveness in the nursing workforce. A great number of health care system are undergoing transformation to the magnet status and the expectations of the employees (nurses) at the entry level is Bachelors of Nursing sciences (BSN) and for those already RNs, to go for BSN .Most hospitals also encourage the RN’s to go for BSN leading to enticements like paying back some percentage of the school fees, engaging in loan forgiving programs, increasing salaries as well as creating prospects for the staff to grow professionally. It is note that at the time IOM report was issued, the approximate number of RNs with Bachelors degree were 50%, currently there is up to 10% ,(Nurse.org, 2016). Moreover, due to the influence of the report, most hospital adopted the program to transition new graduates to seasoned nurses( Residency program). This initiatives has been beneficial as it helps the new nurses acquire skills as well as grow in the profession. Also, currently most nurses are driven to assume management position courageously and work together with other health care team with great confidence hence empowering them to speak up on policies in government levels concerning health care delivery system. . Rules deterring nurses qualified as advanced practice nurses from working in the capacity of their qualification have eradicated empowering them to operate professionally according to their educational qualification though still a gradual process. A total of Nine nine states have detached permissible blocks stopping the extent to which advanced practice nurse ( Nurse Practicioners) will work hence making accessibility to healthcare easy, (Campaign for Action, 2017).
Role of Georgia Based Action Coalitions
The Georgia Nursing Leadership Coalition (GNLC) is collaborating with numerous leaders in Georgia to execute the IOM 2010 report. The primary effort being to unfold resolutions to healthcare issues by strengthening the nursing profession and refining health care delivery system in the state. The organization aims to boost impacting knowledge in the state by looking for accessible funds for nurses that propose to register for RN to BSN bridge program.
The progress of this organization in developing schools is attributed to limited number of nursing instructors to educate those interested in nursing programs. The proposed plan of eradicating this hinderance is by loan forgiving program launched by some agencies to encourage those qualified to take up the positions. ( GNLC, 2016).
Conslusively, the future of Nursing report and its recommendation is a wake up call for nurses to be empowered and confidently take up the responsibility of providing standard care to the public, hence nurses are enjoined to utilize this prospect for the professional growth of its members. Encouraging the qualified ones to assume the management position, practicing according to their qualification and enhancing care they provide.
