The case involving John and Carla needs
to be keenly handled to rekindle their love and connection to improve their
relationship. For that reason, Dr. Gottman would approach this case through an
in-depth evaluation of the relationship between the couple by integrating
research-based intervention to get rid of the
the relationship. The Gottman technique aims to improve verbal communication
between the couple to increase their affection, respect, and intimacy and
overcome the barriers that are likely to create a feeling of being drained or
stagnancy (Davoodvandi, Shokouh, & Farzad, 2018). Dr. Gottman would help John
and Carla to create a better sense of understanding and empathy towards each
other so that they can accept the changes taking place in their relationships,
including the kids and increased responsibilities. This couple therapy method
would help solve the major and minor problems and help them improve emotional
connection. Dr. Gottman would also help the couple emphasize their common needs
instead of individual ambitions so that they can improve their conversational
habits tolerate each others weaknesses.

According to Bowen’s theory, human
behavior matters and helps define the family unit, a complex social system that
requires the couple to interact and influence their behaviors (Papero, Frost,
Havstad, &Noone, 2018). Bowen’s theory would demand John and Carla interconnect
and perceive their family as a whole instead of each member of the family
behaving as an individual element. Any change within the family is highly
likely to affect the entire family system and may positively negatively
influence the couple. Therefore, the intervention should be defined to promote
behavioral change in the family as a whole, including the children’s care and
financial burden that are undesirably affecting John and Carlas family. The
theory encourages the disconnected couple to improve their attention and
support each other unconditionally (Papero et al., 2018). It improves
interdependence and cohesiveness to overcome the pressure, stress, and strain
that the couple goes through. The theory helps promote reciprocation in the
relationship and lowers anxiety and depression that affect the well-being and
quality of life of John and Carla.
