Assignment: Anti-Bullying Ad
PURPOSE
The purpose of this assignment
is for you to learn more about the seriousness of bullying and the importance
of bullying prevention, and to demonstrate your learning by creating an
anti-bullying advertisement
STEP 1
Research an elementary school,
either one that you attended growing up or one in your area. Visit websites
such as greatschools.org, National Center for Education Statistics, or others
to gather information about the demographics at the school. You might also find
details on your chosen schools website. Record demographic information on
race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and graduation rates to get a
broad understanding of the student population at the school. Also, see if
you can find information on how the school addresses social issues such as
poverty, gender equity, disability accommodations, inclusion/acceptance of
sexual minorities, etc.
STEP 2
Research bullying in the school
system and bullying prevention. Conduct Internet searches to find
information about current national or . Find at
least two authoritative sources with current and relevant information that you
can use for this assignment.
STEP 3
Create an anti-bullying
advertisement for the elementary school that you researched. This should
be in the form of an infographic (that is, a poster or flier with visuals and
short statements that can quickly spark interest and inform the viewer about
the issue).
Select information (that is,
short factual statements, images, graphs, etc.) from your research on the
school, bullying, and bullying prevention to use for your infographic.
Your objective is to create an interesting visual, not to summarize all the
information you found in your research. The
infographic must include at least 2 informative images (pictures, charts, and
graphs all count as images) and some text.
I encourage you to create your
own images or to use images with a Creative Commons license (free to
use). With that said, it is OK for the purposes of this assignment to use
a copyrighted image, since your assignment will not be presented
publicly. For all images that you dont create yourself, make sure to
include a citation.
There are existing infographics on most any issue that
you can find by doing a Google image search. I encourage you to do this
to view some examples. However, do not use an existing infographic or even part of one for
this assignment. Create your
own infographic using images from the sources you found, or ones
you’ve created yourself, and carefully formatted textual statements
that are clear and concise. Also, your infographic should focus
directly on the school you selected. The intended audience can be
students at the school, teachers at the school, or parents of students at the
school.
I expect that you will put full
effort into this assignment, but I dont want you to feel overwhelmed by
creating the visual. You can think of an infographic as a simplified poster
or flier. You can design the infographic using any software you like,
including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Photoshop, etc. There are also programs
available online (some have free accounts; others have free trials), such as
Canva, Infogram, and Easel.ly.
STEP 4
Submit your infographic as an
attached file within this assignment link.
Along with
your infographic, include a short paper (about 1 page in length) that explains
the thinking behind your infographic. Im interested in
knowing why you selected the school you selected, what you learned about it,
and why you selected the images and text you selected for your
infographic. What do you hope a viewer would get from seeing your
advertisement? How did you aim to persuade your audience that bullying is
serious and that it can be prevented?
At the end of your paper, include an
of the sources you used for your infographic.
Here is a good website with
information on how to reference electronic sources:
