Bedside Report
In the nursing practice, bedside report has been a technique that has been used by nurses to improve patient care. It allows interaction between the patients family members and the nursing professionals (Fanning-Goff, 2020). This is beneficial since it gives the patient’s caretaker a scope of what the treatment entails. When families are involved, recovery of patients since will be able to provide both financial and emotional support. According to Foster et al. (2019) bedside reporting informs the patient about the conditions and what is required for improvement. This will speed up the rate of recovery since the patient will be prepared psychologically. In addition, bedside reporting builds confidence in nurses since they can have a chronological report about the patient and hence come up with a treatment intervention.
Process of Bedside Reporting

Bedside reporting is a technique that requires patience and keenness. This is to ensure that there are no mistakes done during the process. The first step in bedside reporting involves the staff introduction. The nursing staff is tasked with the mandate of introducing himself, the patient, and the family members or the caregiver. This is the familiarization stage and it’s the primary stage in bedside reporting (Harvey et al., 2018). The second stage is involving the patient participating in the reporting exercise. Family members are only allowed to participate in the exercise only when permitted by the patient. This is then followed by introducing the electronic reporting device and showing the patient the past health records. A comprehensive health assessment is then performed and recorded on the electronic health reporting device. At this stage, the nursing officer is expected to explain to the patient the outcome of the assessment review is the done on the outcomes and an intervention recommended.
Importance of Bedside Reporting
Health care providers should be good communicators when handling patients. According to Domm & Urban (2020), effective communication from nurses will determine the quality of patient care in every institution. When the health workers are reduced in number, it will mean that they will be working for a greater number of hours as compared to the required norm (Jeffereson, 2019). When this occurs, patient care will; be compromised hence inhibiting nurses from giving timely bedtime reports. According to a review journal by the National Health Service Association, the major cause of accumulating bad bedtime reports is a lack of communication during nursing shift handing over (Alforque, 2020). In addition, it was found that the mortality rates in patients increased due to inconsistency in bedside reports.
According to Bressan et al. (2020), engaging patients to contribute to their recovery promotes the rate at which they recover. Availability of the health reports at the patients bedside makes it easier for diagnosis by any nurse or doctor on shift. It also impacts patients with knowledge about their health conditions hence making it easier for them to express themselves during the treatment process. Lastly, bedside report has improved relationship among health workers. This is because bedside reporting integrates all tasks hence making it easier for any health worker to perform follow-up on patients’ treatment.
.
Conclusion
Healthcare is a very important element in every individuals day-to-day life. It is, therefore, appropriate to improve everyones health care by implementing all the required health guidelines. Quality bedside reporting is one of the major core issues that should be considered in improving desired healthy standards (Foster et al., 2019). All nurses should be encouraged to of ensuring that they perform timely bedside reports to help in monitoring patients’ wellbeing. In summary, all health facilities that have embraced the idea of quality and timely bedside reporting have indicated improvements in their patients recovery speed.
