Thesis Statement: This project describes the nursing care for celiac disease.
Introduction
Celiac disease, also called tropical sprue, is a chronic inflammatory condition of the small intestine leading to indigestion and extra-intestinal symptoms.
Etiology
Celiac disease is caused by ingestion of a to indigestion and inflammatory response in susceptible individuals.
Mutation of HLA MHC class 2 gene has been implicated in 30% of patients with celiac disease (Parzanese et al., 2017).
Environmental triggers such as infection with Rotavirus in early childhood cause a chronic inflammatory condition (Parzanese et al., 2017).

Progression
Typical symptoms are noticed at around 6-18 months during weaning, and the disease symptoms progress into adulthood.
Untreated disease progress to cause osteoporosis, risk of adenocarcinoma, refractory sprue, ulcerative jejunoileitis, and reproductive disorders (Parzanese et al., 2017).
Treatment
The mainstay treatment for celiac disease is a .
Appropriate management of the extra-intestinal manifestation, such as treating decreased bone marrow density and neuropathy due to chronic inflammation.
Follow-up within six months of diagnosis to detect complications of celiac disease and 12-24 months follow-up after that (Caio et al., 2019).
Recommended Diet
Gluten-free diet leads to the resolution of intestinal and extra-intestinal symptoms (Itzlinger et al., 2018).
A less than 20mg/kg of gluten because it is difficult to find food not contaminated with gluten (Itzlinger et al., 2018).
Nursing Assessment
The nurse must assess the knowledge of the disease and its treatment.
The nurse must assess the social-economic status of the patient and provide referrals to the social worker for help with adherence to a gluten-free diet.

The nurse should provide patient education
Manage patients according to their individual needs
Provide referrals for specialized care in case of complications.
