RE: Discussion – Week 3
Nurse informaticists are very important to the health care team. Nurse informaticists use data and technology to improve health care and patient outcomes (Laureate Education, 2018). My office has one nurse who has taken on the role of the nursing informaticists. This nurse has not received any formal nursing informatics training. Some nurses enter the nursing informatics field solely because they are comfortable working with computers (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). The nurse informaticist is the resource person for any questions regarding computers or EHR system, as well as assisting new clinical staff with gaining access to the EHR system. She is also the person who contacts the hospital’s IT department and EHR system’s company for any issues that she cannot resolve.
One benefit of the EHR system my office uses is we can customize it, to an extent, to meet our needs. We can customize how we document and add “quick pick” documentation notes to help our efficiency. Our clinical staff have various roles: working on the floor with a provider, telephone triage, and processing lab results and referrals. Our nurse informaticist is a charge nurse, so she more so oversees the floor staff and lab nurses and provides assistance when needed. Because she does not work in direct patient care or triage, this prevents her from recognizing what EHR changes could occur to benefit clinical staff working in these roles. In the past year, clinical staff have made suggestions on what could be beneficial to add or change in the EHR system, yet changes have not occurred. It would be helpful for the nurse informaticist to listen to the concerns of these clinical staff and make the necessary changes, if feasible.
Technology and nursing informatics continually evolving will have a positive impact on the field of nursing. Centralized command centers are a newer idea brought to many hospital networks. The centralized command centers allow for easy entry of patients into the health care system and helps navigate what facility the patient will go to (“The Benefits of Hospital Operational Command Centers,” 2016). The centralized command center helps alleviate the confusion behind multiple entries into a hospital: admitted from the emergency room, being referred from a doctor’s office, and via ambulance, and creates a single point of entry for all admissions (“The Benefits of Hospital Operational Command Centers,” 2016). The command center’s goal is to bring cohesiveness to the health care team (“The Benefits of Hospital Operational Command Centers,” 2016). In one hospital network, nursing staff and emergency medical services staff approved of the command center, commenting how they felt like a “part of the bigger picture,” and the system was operating smoothly (“The Benefits of Hospital Operational Command Centers,” 2016). The system running smoothly and providing good morale will continue to improve the professional interactions between members of the health care team.

WEEK 3 MAIN POST.
Hello Dr. Herrera and class.
Nursing informatics is a specialty that combines nursing science, computer science and information science to manage data. There are different specialties in health care with each communicating with others to achieve a quality patient’s goal. No mater your specialty in health care, you cannot function alone. According to Laureate Education 2018, nursing informatics has become an essential part of healthcare that brings data to life irrespective of your specialty thereby making different specialties to depend on them.
Nurse informaticist work hand in hand with other specialists such as the pharmacist, physicians, computer specialist and many others in health care. Pharmacological data, biological data are included in electronic health records by the nurse informatics. For example, the barcode generated on medication label by pharmacist are integrated into nursing system by nurse informaticist. Nurse informatics help in safeguarding information contained in electronic health records. According to McGonigle & Mastrian, nurse informaticists promote the incorporation of computational tools and algorithm to help handle collection of data. Inter professional interactions is very important in health care for a better outcome for patients as supported by Thew 2016 that failure to recognize how this data interacts throughout the system has been a limitation in the types of data analytics that have been put forth.
This interaction maybe improved with communication by not allowing technologies to overtake verbal communication with each specialist. For example in some facilities, sometimes after 72 hours some pain medication automatically drop off the system then one have a means of sending a missing med through a technological device. My suggestion will be this can be done through verbal communication to enhance listening instead of using technology for all transactions.
Nursing informatics and the use of new technologies improve interactions in health care as a result of its accuracy. For example, the electronic health records help prompt transfer of medical information from one department to another or from facility to facility for quality patients outcome.
