Eugenics
Eugenics refers to a system of ideas and practices whose objective is to purify the population by allowing the superior, smart and beautiful people to breed more while the inferior people should be discouraged from breeding (Chin, 2019). The concept of eugenics was to in which there are no disabilities or deformities. This move means that the unfit or disabled and deformed people could be eliminated to prevent their imperfect species from regenerating.
Replication of the Science of Eugenics
The concept of eugenics is replicated in how the US Supreme Court made a ruling that allowed the states to force the sterilization of people if they were deemed unfit for society (Kelty, 2018). This ruling caused the sterilization of over 70000 Americans in the 20th Century. An example of a state in which this act was orchestrated is North Carolina, and specifically Orange County.
Race Science
Race science is the ideology that races exist biologically and that there are different breeds or species of human beings, which are detectable through the racial hierarchies between people (Saini, 2019). This concept dates back to Charles Darwins classification of human beings into four races: white Europeans, yellow Asians, red Americans, and black Africans. These colors represent superiority, with white signifying an active, smart, and innovative human race while black symbolized a crafty, foolish and slow human race.
Podcasts Influence on Understanding of Taxonomy
This podcast has widened my understanding of taxonomy as a system of classifying and grouping biological organisms according to shared characteristics. These organisms include human beings, which is how the ideology of races was reinforced. The taxonomic units that identified human races have caused strife over superior and inferior races. At the same time, some try to justify why they should be treated with equal dignity because all people are equal.
