1) Chapter 4:Question 1: Think of a self-fulfilling prophecy that you’ve experienced. Based on this experience, do you agree with the Thomas theorem that you can find in the chapter. Use examples from current events to support your answer as well.

2) Chapter 5:Question 2: We read about the effects of isolation and neglect and what it can do to a child and in their future. So… what do you think about parents who work Monday-Friday who drop their young infants and toddler at daycare from 7 am to 6 pm. Is this a form of neglect or isolation?

3) Chapter 6:Question 3: Imagine you are in Asch’s study. Would you find it difficult to give the correct answer in that scenario? Why or why not? Why is it easy to conform? (You will find the link to the video in this week’s Chapter 6 Power Point located in this week’s Module.)

4) Provide comment to the following answer for question 2 (chapter 5):

Chapter 5:I personally feel this is one of the toughest topics to discuss in today’s world. On one hand you have people who feel work should never be a priority of your childrens time and on the other hand you have those who have to work those long hours in order to provide for their family the way they wish to. I agree with both which is what makes this topic so difficult. In Introduction to Sociology, they mention, Sixty years ago, it would not have been considered especially strict for a father to hit his son with a wooden spoon or a belt if he misbehaved, but today that same action might be considered child abuse, (Chapter 5). While this quote is a little off topic from the working situation, I find it very relevant to compare the two. I find the two comparable in the sense that because times have changed, peoples minds have changed as well. I strongly believe back in the 1950s most people would not consider an average person working an average 8-9 hour shift as isolation or neglect. I think nowadays people are too sensitive and make too big of a deal out of the little things. This does not mean I don’t believe in quality time with your family. However, I think providing for the family you decided to make is important and your children should not have to pick between one or the other. Therefore, I do not think having your kids in daycare while you provide for your family is a form of isolation or neglect.

5) Provide comment to the following answer for question 1 (chapter 4):

Chapter 4: Question 1:A that I’ve experienced is during an important exam. I was extremely nervous that I would fail the exam. I devoted extra time to study all the material and still felt anxiety over failing the test. I began to wonder how complicated would the questions be and felt like I wouldn’t comprehend them. The result of this was that I did not score well because, during the exam, I kept entertaining the false idea that I would fail.Thomas theorem stated,if a person perceives a situation as real, it is real in its consequences, which I find true to this particular experience of mine (Chapter 4). On a more positive note, I’ve experienced a that has led me to win a physique competition. Like the book’s examples, I continuously believed when my coaches labeled me as a winner. It brought on a different type of behavior that determined the reality and results of the competition. I believe that self- prophecy can be both good or bad, and consequences, or results, follow. As stated by Thomas, “moral codes and social norms are created by successive definitions of the situation (Chapter 4), to which I agree.
