Job Search, Application, and Interview Processes


Throughout a program of study, students are encouraged to reflect on their strengths, values, and professional goals.  Using the knowledge learned in the courses, students can formulate a plan for the future in which they can create a positive impact as nurse leaders.  Developing a strategy to for a job search, application and interview, will assist students in finding the right position for them. The following post will give an explanation of how I would conduct a job search for a position of interest, offer a brief description of the desired position, and share my application and interview plan for obtaining the position.


A Strategy for a Job Search


            To obtain a position of interest, the first step I must take is to make a strategy to conduct an effective job search.  Harris (2104) suggests eight tips for conducting an effective job search:


· Get to know yourself – understand what it is exactly you are looking for.

· Ensure your application, cover letter, resume, portfolio and LinkedIn profile are up -to -date and highlights your skills and achievements.

· Establish a brand.  What will you become known for?

· Network frequently.

· Target desired companies and positions.  Be proactive and contact mangers, even when they are not hiring.

· Create you job search plan.  Make a list of all companies and contacts you are interested in applying at.

· Follow-up with employers.  Once you have applied or inquired about a position, follow up with a call, email, or note.

· Increase your marketability while you search.  Continue to hone skills and experiences to make you more marketable.


Although, I do not have plans to market outside companies, I do wish to advance my career within the organization I currently work for. In the event, I was looking outside of the Organization; I would turn to LinkedIn, NursingJobs.org, and my professional organization websites.  During my internal search, I honed in on the position of Administrative Director-Patient Care Services.


Job Description


The job description offers the following brief summary: “The Director of Patient Care Services is an integral member of the Division of Patient Care Services leadership team within Marshfield Clinic Health System (MCHS). This individual provides vision and guidance to develop highly competent clinical unit structures, exemplifying quality and safety and promoting a culture of innovative patient‐centered care. The Director of Patient Care Services has accountability for successful operation of inpatient services for individuals and processes within the areas of adult critical care, adult medical/surgical/rehab services, and Women and Children’s Services.” (MCHS, 2017).


Application and Interview Plan


            When applying for an internal position, time is of the essence.  I will submit a cover letter, resume, and application by November 7, 2017 to ensure all my information is completed prior to the deadline of November 15, 2017.  I have recently updated my resume to highlight the coursework and project work that I have completed over the past two years to prepare me for the position.  I will also include a letter of reference from a past manager, as well as my past Chief Nursing Officer. Letters of recommendation give future employers insight into a candidate’s background and capabilities (Wagner, 2017). I plan to be upfront about applying for the position with my current manager, and will kindly ask for his support and a letter of recommendation as well.  I am fortunate to work for an organization that supports managing up and succession planning for future leaders.


After my information has been submitted, I will follow-up with a personal call as well as a note to convey my interest in securing an interview.  In the meantime, I will begin to prepare for an interview.  Career Services as Princeton University (2017), suggests practicing telling your story.  I will use sample behavioral and case scenario questions to help me prepare for my interview.




            A manager once told me the best time to look for a job is when you have a job.  Creating a job search strategy is vital to the success of obtaining a new position.  Preparation is key in securing and participating in an interview.  I look forward to selling the new skills and knowledge that my Master’s program has offered me.
